Its plain exterior and simple rustic interior give it particular charm. Its early ministers, including Samuel Davies, and its continuously used 1769-70 silver communion cups add to its local and religious history.","narrative":"Providence Presbyterian Church is a small frame meeting house in a clearing at the end of a wooded lane near Gum Spring in Louisa County, Virginia. Organized about 1747 under Samuel Morris and built that same year, it was originally called Providence Meeting House. The building measures about 50 by 26 feet, with a tin-covered gable roof, white clapboards added in 1940, and six-over-six and six-over-nine windows. Inside, the west gallery's central portion, chamfered columns and board-and-batten front are original, while the side galleries are later colonial additions. Beaded wainscoting and ceiling boards are probably colonial or original. The church is notable as one of the few colonial frame churches left in Virginia and one of the first Presbyterian churches in the central part of the state. Samuel Davies served as its first minister until 1759, and two silver communion cups made in London in 1769-70 are still used by the congregation.","period_of_significance":"18th Century (1747)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition and altered; occupied and in religious use, on its original site.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:58.083615-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/3/6817/41681703/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/73002034.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002034/bcc3d73a8f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002034/bcc3d73a8f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Michael Kotrady","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Providence_Church_2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Kotrady</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Providence_Church_2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681703","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Providence_Presbyterian_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713105"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/louisa-county/providence-presbyterian-church-73002034/"}
