It is also distinguished by the large amount of rubbed brick surviving on its corners and openings. The church is the third building of St. Paul's Parish and stands on the site of the second.","narrative":"Built in 1766, St. Paul's Church near Owens, Virginia, is a two-story brick building laid out as a true Greek cross, with a hipped roof, modillion cornice and walls in Flemish bond. It is the third church of St. Paul's Parish and occupies the site of the second. Rubbed brick marks the corners, window jambs and arches, giving the building much of its character. The church was reported in ruins around 1812 or 1813, and the county then converted it into a school, adding a second story in the arms and partitioning classrooms. Two of the original doorways were bricked up in 1813, and the north arm was made into rooms for the rector in 1830-31. Control returned to the Episcopalians in 1830, after Methodists and Baptists had also used it. Its significance rests on its rare colonial Greek cross plan and surviving rubbed brickwork. The church also owns an early eighteenth-century communion set made in London in 1720-21.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek cross plan, colonial church","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as good condition, altered, on its original site, occupied and in religious use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.856615-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/28/6814/41681428/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/73002028.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002028/5f0a36a176-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002028/5f0a36a176-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Paul%27s_Episcopal_Church_Parish_House_Owens_VA_Oct_12.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Paul%27s_Episcopal_Church_Parish_House_Owens_VA_Oct_12.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681428","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Paul%27s_Episcopal_Church_(King_George,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7591113"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/king-george-county/st-pauls-church-73002028/"}
