The older house is a rare example of a Fauquier County Colonial farmhouse, and the later house is a dignified late-Federal dwelling. Nearly all of the original detailed interior woodwork in both survives.","narrative":"Oak Hill, a farm estate south of Delaplane in Fauquier County, Virginia, consists of two distinct houses joined by a one-story passage. The earlier is a five-bay, one-and-a-half-story frame farmhouse that Colonel Thomas Marshall built after buying the tract in 1773. The later house, added in 1819, is a two-story temple-form Federal building of stuccoed brick with a pedimented gable and an elliptical fanlight. Chief Justice John Marshall lived here from the time the first house was built until his marriage in 1783, received the property from his father in 1785, and kept a close interest in it afterward. He had the second house built for his son Thomas. Later Marshall descendants held the estate until it left the family after 1864. Much of the original interior woodwork survives, including mantels, cornices and paneled doors. Kitchen, smokehouse and slave quarters stand east of the houses, with barns beyond, and the property remains a working farm facing the Blue Ridge.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Fauquier County Colonial farmhouse (original house); temple-form Federal (later house)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, altered, on its original site, and maintained as a working farm and private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.418658-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/63/6806/41680663/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/73002013.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002013/33e668b7da-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002013/33e668b7da-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cecouchman","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:OakHill_Delaplane_0016.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cecouchman</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:OakHill_Delaplane_0016.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680663","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oak_Hill_(Delaplane,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7073557"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/fauquier-county/oak-hill-73002013/"}
