It serves as the county's government and court building.","why_significant":"It is the architectural and historical focal point of the county, and has housed county government and courts since 1851. It was the scene of the March 1865 Battle of Dinwiddie Court House, which preceded the Battle of Five Forks. Despite later alterations, it keeps its simple antebellum character and a setting little changed since Sheridan's troops camped there.","narrative":"Dinwiddie County Court House is a two-story brick temple-form building in the village of Dinwiddie, Virginia. Completed in 1851 in a simple Greek Revival style, it has Greek Doric pilasters framing the bays and a widened center bay. A 1858 court order called for remodeling it into two levels, but the work was interrupted by the Civil War. Early in the twentieth century the interior was refitted, including a stamped-metal ceiling in the courtroom. A rear wing, an east wing and the Doric portico were added in the early 1930s, the portico as a Civil Works Administration project. The building matters for its architecture and for its role in March 1865, when General Philip Sheridan's troops passed through the village and fought the Battle of Dinwiddie Court House against forces led by General Pickett. Sheridan described the building in his memoirs. The courthouse still sits at the head of a broad lawn beside a 1904 Clerk's Office.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in use for government purposes; condition described as fair and altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.86867-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/11/6804/41680411/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/73002008.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002008/9adb41fcb0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73002008/9adb41fcb0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cecouchman","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DinwiddieCourthouse_rear_9866.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cecouchman</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DinwiddieCourthouse_rear_9866.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680411","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinwiddie_County_Court_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5278762"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/dinwiddie-county/dinwiddie-county-courthouse-73002008/"}
