Its ground-floor arcade uses proportions similar to the Ranges at the University of Virginia. Its resemblance to the Madison County Court House suggests that builder William B. Phillips may have worked on it.","narrative":"Built around 1830 in Bowling Green, the Caroline County Court House is a two-story brick building in the form of a Roman temple, designed in the Roman Revival manner associated with Thomas Jefferson. Its front is laid in Flemish bond, with a Tuscan entablature and pediments at each end, and a four-bay facade that opens into a ground-floor arcade of six rounded arches. The arcade uses proportions similar to those on the Ranges at the University of Virginia. Records were destroyed, so the builder and exact date are unknown, but the close resemblance to the Madison County Court House, erected 1828-30, suggests that William B. Phillips, who also worked at the University, may have been involved. The previous court house is believed to have burned around 1830. The present building is thought to be the sixth to serve the county. The interior was renovated in 1969-70, and a rear brick addition was finished in 1970. It remains in use as a court house.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (c.1830)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Roman Revival (Jeffersonian)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition, altered, and occupied as a court house; the interior was extensively renovated in 1969-70 and a rear brick addition was completed in 1970.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.817639-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/69/6799/41679969/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/73001999.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001999/7a25de32a7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001999/7a25de32a7-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Caroline_County_Courthouse_Virginia_Oct_12.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Caroline_County_Courthouse_Virginia_Oct_12.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"03000439","name":"Bowling Green Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/bowling-green-historic-district-03000439/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679969","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caroline_County_Courthouse_(Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712130"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/caroline-county/caroline-county-courthouse-73001999/"}
