It was built around 1787 for Waddy Cobb, who also had nearby Elk Hill built about ten years later. From about 1828 to 1904 it served as the rectory of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, and a long succession of rectors is believed to have lived there. After the church closed temporarily in 1904, the house passed into private hands. The house has exterior-end brick chimneys, early beaded siding, and a twentieth-century portico with four fluted Doric columns. Inside, paneled wainscoting, dentil cornices and carved mantelpieces survive, and an old log kitchen stands at the rear. It was listed as a typical late eighteenth-century Bedford County farmhouse with remarkably intact interior woodwork, and as part of the St. Stephen's Road rural neighborhood. The nominated tract covers 25 acres of rolling country.","period_of_significance":"18th Century (c. 1787)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition and altered; occupied as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.694641-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/6797/41679750/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/73001998.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001998/8f3039a069-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001998/8f3039a069-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Perrowville_Road,_the_Old_Rectory.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Perrowville_Road,_the_Old_Rectory.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679750","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Rectory_(Perrowville,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7084822"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/bedford/old-rectory-73001998/"}
