It is also tied to the prominent Tabb and Mason families, including John Y. Mason, Secretary of the Navy, and to visits by John Randolph of Roanoke.","narrative":"Haw Branch is a large frame plantation house reached by a country road winding through woods near Amelia, Virginia. Its central five-bay block with a hipped roof is flanked by symmetrical three-bay wings, set over an English basement and surrounded by a brick-paved, dug-out area. The house largely dates from the late eighteenth century and is believed to include parts of an earlier, smaller dwelling. Inside, finely detailed woodwork, thought to date from about 1815, includes elliptical hall arches, tobacco and oak leaf motifs, and hawthorne blossom carvings on mantels and doorways. Part of an original row of outbuildings survives, including a schoolhouse, kitchen and weaving room, and smoke house. Colonel Thomas Tabb bought the land in 1743, and the property later passed through the Barksdale and Mason families before an English owner ran it as an experimental farm from 1872. It was restored in 1965. Its Federal interiors and family associations make it distinctive in Amelia County.","period_of_significance":"18th and 19th centuries","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, altered, on its original site, occupied and used as a private residence; restored in 1965.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.657272-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/4/6795/41679504/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/73001992.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001992/ee6c1bb960-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001992/ee6c1bb960-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Motocop68","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Haw_Branch_Plantation.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Motocop68</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Haw_Branch_Plantation.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679504","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haw_Branch","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712509"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/amelia-county/haw-branch-73001992/"}
