Its proportions, modillion cornice and imported Carrara marble mantels are unusually refined for a rural house of the period. It also keeps its original outbuildings, a late-eighteenth century dwelling built by William Short, and notable gardens.","narrative":"Morven is a brick country house near Simeon in Albemarle County, Virginia, set on the brow of a hill at the foot of Carter's Mountain. The five-bay, two-story main block and a lower north wing were completed in 1821 by Martin Thacker for David Higginbotham, who renamed the former Indian Camp estate Morven. The land had earlier belonged to William Short, friend and secretary to Thomas Jefferson, who built the small white frame building that later served as the office. The house is noted for Flemish bond brickwork, Tuscan porches, a fanlight doorway and a modillion cornice, along with Carrara marble mantels imported for the principal rooms. Original outbuildings survive, including the kitchen and smokehouse, and formal gardens lie north of the house. In the twentieth century Charles A. Stone bought the property in 1926, renovated the house and gardens, and established the Morven stud farm, known for Thoroughbred racing horses.","period_of_significance":"1821","architect_builder":"Martin Thacker (builder); later update by architect Howard Sill of Baltimore","architectural_style":"Federal (Federal/Roman Revival)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition described as excellent and good; the house is occupied and in use as a residence and stud farm at the time of the 1973 form.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.452243-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/15/6793/41679315/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/73001991.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001991/51bc15f841-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001991/51bc15f841-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Lzgoss","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Morven.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Lzgoss</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Morven.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"07001236","name":"Southern Albemarle Rural Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/southern-albemarle-rural-historic-district-07001236/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679315","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morven_(Simeon,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712897"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/albemarle-county/morven-73001991/"}
