Its store, school and apartments served important functions in the residential neighborhood that surrounded the Capitol in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It also links to a period of Austin's history disappearing under State office construction.","narrative":"Standing at the northwest corner of West 13th and Colorado streets in Austin, this two-story Victorian brick building was put up around 1891 by grocer John Goodman, who bought the corner in 1887. It is painted white and has a second-floor gallery enclosed by a decorative cast iron balustrade, tall inset transoms, slender two-over-two windows upstairs and a molded brick cornice. Some changes have been made, including altered ground-floor windows, converted side doors and removal of the roof-line crenellation. Inside are large rooms with very high ceilings, twelve-foot-wide stairways and a basement once used to store wine. Goodman ran a grocery and saloon on the ground floor until 1924, while the upper floor first housed the Bickler Academy, a preparatory school, and later apartments until 1969. The property was listed because it is one of the few surviving 19th century commercial buildings near the Capitol, recalling the neighborhood that once surrounded it.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (ca. 1891)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition but altered; occupied, with a physician's office on the first floor and an office on the second floor at the time of nomination.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:18.730723-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/87/9736/40973687/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/73001976.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001976/e1d633d88e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001976/e1d633d88e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"LoneStarMike","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GoodmanBldg-2010-08-b.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">LoneStarMike</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GoodmanBldg-2010-08-b.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40973687","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodman_Building_(Austin,_Texas)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5583458"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/travis-county/goodman-building-73001976/"}
