It was the home of Justice Joseph Story from 1811 until 1829.","why_significant":"It is the only surviving residence associated with Joseph Story's productive life. Story was a Supreme Court justice whose opinions and Commentaries on the Constitution laid a judicial basis for national supremacy. He is also regarded as the father of Harvard Law School and an authority on admiralty, equity and commercial law.","narrative":"Overlooking Salem Common from 26 Winter Street, this three-story brick house with a hip roof is laid in Flemish bond. Its narrow end faces Winter Street, and a slim service ell extends behind. The front portico has been altered several times, and the present portico, bay window and wide porch date from 1901. Window lintels are splayed, reeded stone. Inside, the original moulding, woodwork and mantelpieces appear to survive, and the house is very well cared for. Its importance lies in its first prominent resident, Joseph Story, who lived here from 1811 to 1829. A Supreme Court justice, Story wrote influential opinions and Commentaries on the Constitution that supported the supremacy of the nation over the states. He shaped admiralty, equity and commercial law, and helped establish legal education at Harvard Law School. This house is the only surviving residence tied to his productive years. It remains a private home and is not open to the public.","period_of_significance":"1811-1829","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Rated in excellent condition and very well cared for, with original moulding, woodwork and mantelpieces apparently intact; a private residence not open to the public.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.78575-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/1/7937/63793701/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/73001952_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001952/cf28716f25-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001952/cf28716f25-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Fletcher6","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_Story_House_from_Common.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Fletcher6</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_Story_House_from_Common.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"76000303","name":"Salem Common Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/salem-common-historic-district-76000303/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793701","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Story_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6287222"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/story-joseph-house-73001952/"}
