The tavern dates to about 1796 and the barn to 1848.","why_significant":"The tavern is described as the only one of nine taverns or inns on the National Road between Uniontown and Brownsville known to predate the road's 1818 opening, and one of the earliest tavern keepers in the area. Its stone construction is presented as a folk craft built by Welsh, English and Scotch-Irish masons rather than German stonemasons, and its intact cellar kitchen, barroom and bar are cited as significant interior features.","narrative":"Built about 1796 by Peter Colley in Brier Hill, Fayette County, this two-section sandstone tavern is laid in random courses with a boxed cornice and wooden shingle roof. Its earlier block is three bays wide, with a central hall, and its rear addition extends about 44 feet. Ten fireplaces remain in the house, eight for heating and two for cooking in the cellar. The cellar kitchen keeps its original dirt floor, a walk-in fireplace and a food storage room with 67 wrought iron meat hooks. The barroom, its fireplace and an 1830 or 1840 bar with a beverage pass-through also survive intact. The tavern predates the 1818 opening of the National Road, which passed within ten feet of its front door, and it is regarded as one of the earliest taverns in the area. The attached bank barn, built in 1848 with queen post framing, is the only other surviving part of the original complex.","period_of_significance":"1796","architect_builder":"Peter Colley (builder of tavern, 1796); two carpenters of probably English ancestry (barn, 1848, unnamed)","architectural_style":"Georgian style exterior","criteria":[],"status_note":"Fair condition, altered, on original site","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:30.618324-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/73001630.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001630/bb0177cdb4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001630/bb0177cdb4-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peter_Colley_Tavern.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peter_Colley_Tavern.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"73001629","name":"Brier Hill","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/brier-hill-73001629/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71994757","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Colley_Tavern_and_Barn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7173334"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/fayette-county/colley-peter-tavern-and-barn-73001630/"}
