It was the home of Joseph Thatcher, a coachmaker, and remained in his family's possession until 1882. Thatcher, his two oldest sons and a grandson ran a profitable tilt and blade mill and coachbuilding shop along nearby Chester Creek. The house passed to George Wood in 1900 and then to his daughter Dorothea in 1936, when it had deteriorated badly. She commissioned a restoration that returned the house to its original character. The work recovered much of the original interior woodwork, including the mantels, reeding, gougework and five fireplaces, and replaced the tin roof with wooden shingles. A missing staircase was rebuilt using original reeded spindles. The property is valued for its early preservation of a historic building.","period_of_significance":"1798-1800","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored in 1936 with an added ell on the north elevation; the original site is retained and the condition is recorded as excellent.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:12:59.984531-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/73001627.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001627/82330bc4a5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001627/82330bc4a5-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"User:Smallbones on English Wikipedia.","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Forge_Hill.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Smallbones on English Wikipedia.</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Forge_Hill.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71998566","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forge_Hill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5469585"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/delaware-county/forge-hill-73001627/"}
