The property's history includes an earlier stone barn dating to 1798 and later blacksmithing use.","narrative":"Built in 1820 by Nicholas East, this two-and-one-half-story house in Valley Forge, Chester County, is constructed of random fieldstone with heavy corner quoins. It has a gable roof, a fieldstone chimney at each gable end, and a center hall plan with an original open stairway whose step ends are scrolled. East bought the property in 1804, and a stone barn had stood there since at least 1798. After the property passed out of the East family, an 1863 newspaper advertisement described a stone dwelling house, a stone barn, a wagonhouse and a blacksmith shop, suggesting that the owners combined blacksmithing with farming. The house is regarded as a recently restored example of the most characteristic farmhouse type of the early nineteenth century in the area. It also retains a late nineteenth-century one-story wooden porch that runs the full length of the south elevation. Rear additions were made in two stages.","period_of_significance":"1820","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Restored by the present owner, who remodelled the kitchen and removed a stucco coating from the exterior.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:30.383532-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/73001614.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001614/678251b361-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001614/678251b361-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NICHOLAS_EAST_HOUSE.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"98000400","name":"West Vincent Highlands Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/west-vincent-highlands-historic-district-98000400/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71998466","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_East_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7025333"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/chester-county/east-nicholas-house-73001614/"}
