Its use as a secondary boarding school for Chester County boys before a free school system was established also gives it educational significance.","narrative":"Built around 1810 by Richard Strode as a stone house of two and a half stories with a gable roof, the building stands in Lenape on the West Chester and Sconnelltown Roads in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Strode built it as a private residence, and in 1816 Edward Sparks established the East Bradford Boarding School for Boys there. Two years later Strode's grandson, Joseph C., became principal and ran the school until 1846, and it closed finally in 1857. The school provided secondary education to some of the boys of the county at a time when public schooling was not yet available, making it typical of such boarding schools. The house is valued for its architecture as a good example of early nineteenth century rural building. Its pedimented doorway with fluted pilasters and fanlight, and its modillioned cornice, are considered particularly handsome. The east elevation is unchanged, and the doorway, cornice and windows are original.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The original section of the house is said to be largely unchanged on the east elevation; the west porch, north doorway porch and kitchen wing are twentieth century additions.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:29.653242-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/73001605.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001605/65affc7518-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001605/65affc7518-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:E_Bradford_School_for_Boys.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:E_Bradford_School_for_Boys.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"89000354","name":"Strode's Mill Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/strodes-mill-historic-district-89000354/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71996229","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Bradford_Boarding_School_for_Boys","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5327897"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/chester-county/east-bradford-boarding-school-for-boys-73001605/"}
