The main section dates from about 1735 and it has later additions from 1792 and 1902.","why_significant":"The house is significant for its association with General Anthony Wayne, who was born there in 1745 and later distinguished himself at Brandywine, Germantown, Valley Forge and Yorktown. The nomination also argues that its architecture reflects an early Chester County taste for simple, well-proportioned stone houses with refined detailing, and that it retains its basic eighteenth-century character.","narrative":"Built of uncoursed fieldstone, this house in Paoli began in 1724 as a small two-story house with a garret, built by Anthony Wayne, grandfather of the Revolutionary War general. About 1735 a five-bay center hall section was added, with flanking rooms on either side of an off-center hall. It has a heavy moulded cornice carried across pedimented gables, a pent hood over the front door, and a double door with a chevron design. A one-and-a-half-story east wing was added in 1792 to hold a new kitchen, and a north wing followed in 1902. The house is best known as the birthplace of General Anthony Wayne, who was born there in 1745. Papers and letters record visits by Madison, Monroe, Jefferson, Franklin, Lafayette, Steuben and Alexander Hamilton. Its interior woodwork, including dentilled cornices and fireplace mantles, survives from the 1735 phase.","period_of_significance":"1724-1792","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"The interior is being restored, with the box stairs being rebuilt and original colors reproduced.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:29.858245-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/73001603.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001603/3ee3797b83-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001603/3ee3797b83-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Smallbones at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Waynesboro.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones at en.wikipedia</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Waynesboro.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71995399","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waynesborough","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7976812"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/chester-county/waynesborough-73001603/"}
