It serves as the President's Home of Marietta College.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that the house and carriage house have a highly refined design that is unique in Marietta. Although small compared with other outstanding examples of the period, they surpass them in refinement and quality of execution. The property also reflects ownership by the Mills family for a century and later use by Marietta College.","narrative":"Built about 1822 for Henry Pierson Wilcox, Marietta's eighth postmaster, this two-story brick house at 301 Fifth Street replaced a small frame house of 1797. It is three bays wide with a gabled roof and a full-height pedimented portico, which Col. John Mills added about 1840 along with side porches. Mills, a banker and treasurer of Marietta College, acquired the property in 1837, and his family held it for a century. In the 1850s he added a street wall and a curved iron railing at the Putnam Street entrance, along with formal gardens. A two-story brick carriage house with a louvered cupola stands behind. Marietta College bought the property in 1937 and remodeled the interior for its presidents. The house was recognized for the refinement and quality of its Federal design, which is considered unique in Marietta. It remains in excellent condition and in use as the president's residence.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1822)","architect_builder":"Henry Wilcox (builder); street railing designed by Rufus Erastus Harte and executed by Count de Grasse Bonney","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, occupied, and used as a private residence and for educational purposes as the Marietta College president's home.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.062085-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/73001550.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001550/a5a2e4038d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001550/a5a2e4038d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Bwsmith84 at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wilcox-Mills_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bwsmith84 at en.wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wilcox-Mills_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"01001040","name":"Marietta Historic District (Boundary Decrease)","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/marietta-historic-district-boundary-decrease-01001040/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991891","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138763877"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/washington-county/wilcox-mills-house-73001550/"}
