It is also described as a good small example of Federal Greek Revival architecture.","narrative":"This small brick building in Unionville, Ohio, was a land office of the Connecticut Land Company, built around 1817 and probably by company surveyor Abraham Tappan. The original structure was a pedimented brick rectangle with twin brick pilasters topped by Ionic capitals, dentils along the gable, and an oval light in the pediment. A wooden porch and a masonry lean-to were added after 1820. Inside, a square front room and a smaller rear room retain distinctive woodwork, including corner blocks carved with concentric circles. Its historical importance lies in the Connecticut Western Reserve, a tract of about 3,000,000 acres south of Lake Erie that Connecticut kept when it ceded its other western lands in 1786. The reserve was sold in 1795 to a syndicate of investors, the Connecticut Land Company, and offices like this one handled the partitioning, sale and administration of the surrounding land. The building is also a modest example of Federal Greek Revival design.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (c. 1817)","architect_builder":"Probably Abraham Tappan, surveyor for the Connecticut Land Company","architectural_style":"Federal Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition, altered, on its original site, and unoccupied at the time of nomination; the original owner's name is omitted for privacy.
