It began in 1818 as a small one-story stagecoach stop on the early road between Buffalo and Cleveland, built by Joseph Rider, one of the earliest settlers in the Lake County area. In 1832 Jonathan Goldsmith, described as the county's most famous builder, added a second floor and giant square Doric columns supporting the overhanging roof. The timber-frame building has clapboard siding, a stone foundation and a gable roof. It was converted to a residence in 1865, and later changes included a remodeled west end in 1913, a dining room added in 1922, and aluminum siding. The tavern is significant as a surviving stagecoach stop and as one of only a handful of remaining examples of Goldsmith's Federal and Greek Revival work in the Western Reserve. Railroads reduced travel on the road in the 1850s and 1860s, but automobile traffic later brought travelers back.","period_of_significance":"1810-1818 (alteration by Goldsmith in 1832)","architect_builder":"Joseph Rider (builder); Jonathan Goldsmith (1832 remodeling)","architectural_style":"Federal and Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition and marked altered, on its original site; the form checks both occupied and unoccupied status.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.758174-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/73001487.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001487/ffdb7c41d0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001487/ffdb7c41d0-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lutz_Tavern_in_Painesville.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lutz_Tavern_in_Painesville.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989569","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138450561"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/lake-county/lutzs-tavern-73001487/"}
