It anchors the west end of Garfield Place (Piatt Park) in downtown Cincinnati.","narrative":"Covenant-First Presbyterian Church is a stone Gothic church at Eighth and Elm Streets in downtown Cincinnati. Built of hand-cut random ashlar from the quarries of church member Colonel Peter Randolph Neff, it was designed by William Walter and built by J. W. Cotteral & Son over about two years at a cost of $250,000. It was dedicated on April 11, 1875, as Second Presbyterian Church. The facade has a large pointed-arch window above three pedimented portals, with a bell tower at the northeast corner and a lower tower at the southeast. Inside, the nave has exposed wood trusses, walnut woodwork, a semi-circular seating plan and deep-toned memorial windows in the Munich tradition. The pulpit furniture was carved from black walnut by Henry L. Fry and his son William H. Fry. The congregation grew through mergers of six Presbyterian groups between 1909 and 1933. The church also closes the west end of Garfield Place, facing the public library at the east end of the park.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"William Walter, architect; J. W.
