It is also a good example of Greek Revival architecture, with a porch published in a 1937 book on early American doorways. It is probably the oldest, and one of only two or three, of Xenia's old business buildings remaining essentially unchanged.","narrative":"At the northeast corner of Detroit and East Second Streets in Xenia, Ohio, stands a two-story Greek Revival building that opened on June 1, 1835, as the Bank of Xenia, the first bank in Greene County about which definite information has been preserved. It is templeform and pilastered, with an entrance porch of two Doric columns, a full entablature with triglyphs and metopes, and a wrought iron balcony railing. The bank later became a state branch bank and then a national bank, and it moved to a newer Victorian Gothic building around 1867. In 1902 the old building was sold to a physician, who used it as an office and residence. Alterations have been slight: one side window was bricked in and a basement entrance added below ground level. The porch was included in a 1937 book on early American doorways, and the building is probably the oldest of Xenia's remaining business buildings.","period_of_significance":"19th Century; ca. 1835","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as good and altered only slightly; the first floor and basement house businesses and an army recruiting station, and the second floor holds apartments.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.394048-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/73001450.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001450/b12f71b9fc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001450/b12f71b9fc-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bank_of_Xenia.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bank_of_Xenia.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"14000590","name":"Downtown Xenia Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/downtown-xenia-historic-district-14000590/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988710","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_of_Xenia","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2493263"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/greene-county/bank-of-xenia-73001450/"}
