Columbus architect D. W. Gibbs and Company designed it after county commissioners decided in the late 1870s that the 1830 courthouse no longer met county needs. J. North Brothers and Lichtenberger were the contractors. The ashlar first floor has round-arched entrances in pedimented pavilions on the south, west and north sides, with balustrades on the second floor and Corinthian columns on the third. A square belfry with four clock faces and a metal dome topped by a statue of Astraea rises from the flat roof. Inside, three murals by Archibald Willard, depicting the Spirits of Electricity, Telegraphy and the U.S. Mails, decorate the third floor. The courthouse is described as one of Gibbs' finest works and among the best preserved in Ohio. It remains in good condition and is well maintained.","period_of_significance":"19th Century; built 1882-1884","architect_builder":"D. W. Gibbs and Company of Columbus, Ohio (architect); J.
