It was built in 1901 to designs by the architects Hubbell and Benes.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the chapel is one of the finest examples of Neo-Classical Revival architecture in the Western Reserve. It shows originality in adapting classical form to modern use rather than copying a specific model such as the Parthenon. It is also a memorial gift of the family of Jeptha H. Wade, founder of the Western Union Telegraph Company.","narrative":"Wade Memorial Chapel is a small marble chapel in Lakeview Cemetery, Cleveland, completed in 1901 to designs by the Cleveland firm Hubbell and Benes. The one-story building measures roughly thirty by forty feet and is faced in white marble. Fluted Ionic columns, half columns along the north, east and south walls, a pedimented west portico, a full Ionic entablature under the eaves and a gabled metal roof give it a classical character. Inside, mosaics decorate the walls and a Tiffany window marks the east end. The chapel was a gift of the family of Jeptha H. Wade, founder of the Western Union Telegraph Company, who also gave Cleveland the land for Wade Park. It was recognized mainly for its architecture, as one of the finest Neo-Classical Revival buildings in the Western Reserve, adapting classical forms freely for modern use. It remains in excellent, unaltered condition and is open for services of any belief.","period_of_significance":"20th Century (built 1901)","architect_builder":"Hubbell and Benes","architectural_style":"Neo-Classical Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, unaltered, on its original site, and in religious use; open to all persons who wish to hold services there.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.035412-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/73001422.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001422/5a7d5e72fd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001422/5a7d5e72fd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 1.0","author":"Christopher Busta-Peck","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wade_Chapel_Cleveland_Ohio.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Christopher Busta-Peck</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/1.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 1.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wade_Chapel_Cleveland_Ohio.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987448","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wade_Memorial_Chapel","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7959092"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/wade-memorial-chapel-73001422/"}
