It is also one of the best surviving works of the architectural firm Heard and Porter. Its interior, rebuilt after the 1884 fire by Charles Schweinfurth, includes windows from the studios of Louis Comfort Tiffany and John LaFarge.","narrative":"Old Stone Presbyterian Church occupies the northwest corner of Cleveland's Public Square, on the site of the earlier First Presbyterian Church. The First Presbyterian Society commissioned it in 1853, and the firm of Heard and Porter designed it as a Romanesque church with massive blackened sandstone walls, round-arched openings and two asymmetrical towers. It was dedicated in 1855. Fires in 1857 and 1884 gutted the interior and damaged the right tower's spire, which was never replaced after 1884. Charles Schweinfurth redesigned the interior after the second fire, giving it hammer beam trusses, a wood-sheathed barrel vault and oak finishes. The sanctuary holds notable windows, including one by John LaFarge and several from the studios of Louis Comfort Tiffany. The church was listed as an early example of Romanesque Revival architecture in Cleveland and as one of the best surviving works of Heard and Porter.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific dates 1853-1855, 1884)","architect_builder":"Heard and Porter (Charles Heard and Simeon Porter); interior redesigned by Charles Schweinfurth after 1884","architectural_style":"Romanesque Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as good condition, altered, on its original site, occupied, and in religious use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.983774-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/73001414.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001414/d2799c683f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001414/d2799c683f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"The original uploader was Confiteordeo at English Wikipedia.","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Stone_Church_Cleveland.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">The original uploader was Confiteordeo at English Wikipedia.</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Stone_Church_Cleveland.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"02000702","name":"Euclid Avenue Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/euclid-avenue-historic-district-02000702/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987472","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Stone_Church_(Cleveland)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7085106"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/old-stone-church-73001414/"}
