It was probably built around 1795 by Nathaniel Jones.","why_significant":"It is described as one of the few early Federal plantation houses remaining in Wake County. It is noted for its proportions, its modillion cornice, marbleized baseboard and an unusual painted Federal mantel. It is also locally significant as the home of an important branch of the Jones family, prominent in early Wake County affairs.","narrative":"Set on a wooded hill whose large trees screen the commercial development around it, this early Federal plantation house in Raleigh was probably built about 1795 by Nathaniel Jones, known as Crabtree Jones. It has a two-story, five-bay main block with one-story wings and a later rear extension. Exterior details include molded weatherboards, nine-over-nine windows and a molded cornice with undercut modillions. Inside, the first-floor rooms have paneled wainscot, a marbleized baseboard and large three-part Federal mantels. The mantel in the main room carries painted cornucopias, fruit and grain, flanked by landscape scenes. Few houses of this type survive in Wake County. The house also matters as the home of a influential Jones family line. Nathaniel Jones and his descendants served in the General Assembly and held other public roles, and his son Kimbrough farmed the plantation through the Civil War era. The family later sold the property to a realty company.","period_of_significance":"18th Century (ca. 1795)","architect_builder":"Nathaniel Jones (thought to have built the house)","architectural_style":"Early Federal plantation house","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition and altered; private residence, occupied.
