It is of particular significance in the education of black women. Its bold stuccoed ornament against red brick also makes it a major landmark of south Raleigh.","narrative":"Estey Hall is a large Victorian brick building on the Shaw University campus in Raleigh. Four stories tall, it has a cross-gable roof topped by a frame cupola, a bracketed cornice, and segmental-arched openings framed in stuccoed brick. Off-white stucco quoins and window surrounds contrast strongly with the red brick walls, and a three-story porch shelters the west entrance. A later nineteenth-century brick addition adjoins the south side. Built in 1873 as Estey Seminary to serve the university's women students, it was funded in part by Jacob Estey of Vermont and George Morse of Connecticut. An 1874-1875 school catalogue called it the finest school building in the state and the pride of North Carolina's Black community. As the oldest surviving Shaw University building, it is recognized as an important monument of the state's Black history and of the education of Black women. Once considered for demolition, it was slated for exterior restoration and interior renovation for a new use.","period_of_significance":"1873","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian institutional","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as fair; the interior is altered and deteriorated, with complete renovation and exterior restoration planned.
