It is also significant for agriculture, as the center of a large plantation with orchards, rice fields, a cotton gin and formal gardens. The house has stayed in the Whitaker family and is little altered.","narrative":"Shell Castle is a large frame plantation house near Enfield in Halifax County, North Carolina. Built by Revolutionary War veteran Matthew Cary Whitaker, who bought the land in 1789, it was thought complete in 1802, though a brick dated 1793 suggests part was finished earlier. The two-and-one-half-story, L-shaped house has a five-bay front, nine-over-nine windows and a bold modillion cornice. Its interior is strikingly plain, with flush-sheathed wainscots and simple board mantels. Family tradition says the name came from oyster shells hauled from Norfolk to make mortar; another account credits the contrast between its ambitious exterior and plain interior. The plantation once included orchards, a cider press, rice fields, a cotton gin, a fish pond, a deer park, a distillery and formal gardens. A tack house, kitchen and office survive, along with a family burying ground and garden areas. The Whitaker family has owned the property continuously, and the house remains little altered.","period_of_significance":"18th and 19th centuries; specific date 1802","architect_builder":"Matthew Cary Whitaker (builder)","architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is listed as good and altered, on its original site; the house is occupied, in private ownership and used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:55.85318-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/44/7206/47720644/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/73001347.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001347/9c9c995a32-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001347/9c9c995a32-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Surfdog1993","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shell_castel.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Surfdog1993</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shell_castel.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720644","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shell_Castle","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18711653"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/halifax-county/shell-castle-73001347/"}
