It is one of only two surviving pre-Revolutionary gambrel-roof houses in the New Bern area, which makes it important for tracing the evolution of the gambrel-roof house in North Carolina.","narrative":"This one-and-a-half-story frame house with a gambrel roof stands on a narrow lot on Hancock Street in New Bern. Built in the late eighteenth century, it once had an unobstructed view of the Trent River to the south. The lot passed from Frederick Jones and Jonathan Bangs to Mary York, who transferred it to attorney Patrick Gordon by 1768. Gordon wrote in 1771 that he was building a house there, possibly finishing one begun by Stephen York. After his death in 1773, the property was fought over in court for decades. The house later stood beside a railroad line and bridge that became a Union supply link in 1862, and Union troops may have occupied it. Inside are a closed-string stair, a Federal mantel and a Georgian-style second-floor mantel. Only two pre-Revolutionary gambrel-roof houses survive in the New Bern area, and this one differs in form from the other, the Hawks House, which gives it importance in the story of the type in North Carolina.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian and Federal elements; gambrel-roof frame dwelling","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition and altered, on its original site; used as a private residence and described as occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.719869-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/28/7197/47719728/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/73001328.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001328/555199e408-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001328/555199e408-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tradewinds","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:York-Gordon_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Tradewinds</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:York-Gordon_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719728","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/York-Gordon_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18159357"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/craven-county/york-gordon-house-73001328/"}
