It shows the skill of early nineteenth century New Bern craftsmen, probably John Dewey, through its carved exterior and interior ornament. During the Civil War it served as General John Foster's residence and part of the Union headquarters for the Department of North Carolina.","narrative":"Begun about 1810 and finished by 1816, this two-and-a-half story brick house on East Front Street in New Bern follows the side-hall plan common to the town's Federal houses. Frederick Jones started construction, and merchant Moses Jarvis completed it. The brick is laid in Flemish bond, and the cornices, dormers and small pedimented porch carry carved wave-pattern, cable, modillion and dentil ornament. Inside, an elliptical arch frames the stair, and the two parlors have paneled wainscots, entablatures and elaborate overmantels. Stylistic comparisons with the Masonic Theater Lodge Room suggest that builder John Dewey constructed it, and it is nearly a twin of the neighboring Eli Smallwood House. During the Civil War, after Union forces occupied New Bern in 1862, General John Foster used it as his residence, and it became part of the Eighteenth Army Corps headquarters. It belongs to a group of nineteenth century brick houses at Union and East Front streets.","period_of_significance":"1810-1816","architect_builder":"Frederick Jones and Moses Jarvis (builders/owners); John Dewey probably the builder","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, unaltered and on its original site; the form checks it as occupied and a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.877685-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/2/7197/47719702/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/73001323.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001323/33fd637f27-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001323/33fd637f27-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tradewinds","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jones-Jarvis_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Tradewinds</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jones-Jarvis_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719702","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jones%E2%80%93Jarvis_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18152784"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/craven-county/jones-jarvis-house-73001323/"}
