Seth Thomas Company of Thomaston, Connecticut made it, and it was completed for shipment in July 1920.","why_significant":"The nomination presents the clock as a rare surviving example of an ornate four-dial Seth Thomas post clock, the only one of its type known to survive in North Carolina. Only three other similar operating clocks were identified nationally. The clock is original, still operates, and symbolizes Baxter's Jewelry Store and the exuberant pre-Depression commercial era.","narrative":"Rising about twenty feet above a New Bern sidewalk, this four-dial post clock stands opposite the entrance of Baxter's Jewelry Store on Pollock Street. Seth Thomas of Thomaston, Connecticut, made it of cast iron with brass and steel works, and shipped it in July 1920 as the jewelry store moved to Pollock Street. A square pedestal carries a fluted column with a stylized Corinthian capital, topped by a bulbous head with lion's-head ornaments and a three-tiered finial. Lettering on the faces advertises Baxter the jeweler and an eyesight specialist. The design dates to earlier Seth Thomas catalogs, and this installation was one of the later examples of it. It is the only clock of its type known to survive in North Carolina, and only three other similar operating clocks were identified elsewhere in the country. All parts are original, and the clock still keeps time. Its listing recognizes it as rare street furniture and a symbol of 1920s commercial flamboyance.","period_of_significance":"20th Century (clock dated 1920)","architect_builder":"Seth Thomas Company, Thomaston, Connecticut","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Excellent condition, unaltered, on its original site; the clock still operates and is kept in perfect repair, with all components original.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.122812-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/88/7196/47719688/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/73001319.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001319/80ff86e294-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001319/80ff86e294-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tradewinds","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Baxter_Clock.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Tradewinds</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Baxter_Clock.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719688","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baxter_Clock","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18148366"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/craven-county/baxter-clock-73001319/"}
