Seth Gibbs built it about 1851.","why_significant":"The house is a notable exception to Beaufort's usual building traditions because of its emphatic Greek Revival proportions and detail, its orientation to the water and its nearly unaltered condition. In the 1880s it housed the Johns Hopkins Seaside Laboratory, probably the first school of marine biology in the United States. That work helped lead to the federal Bureau of Fisheries laboratory at Beaufort.","narrative":"Built about 1851 by Seth Gibbs, this frame house at 903 Front Street in Beaufort faces the Taylor's Creek waterfront. It is five bays wide and four deep, with a shallow hip roof, unusually wide eaves and a two-tier front porch with paneled posts and turned balusters. Inside, a center hall runs between rooms with nearly floor-length windows, and a cast-iron mantel marks the southeast parlor. Greek Revival proportions and detail set it apart from the plainer houses typical of isolated Beaufort. The house also has a place in science. From 1880 the Johns Hopkins Seaside Laboratory rented it for roughly ten years, and one small darkroom-laboratory room survives. That laboratory was probably the first marine biology school in the country, and its work helped lead to the federal fisheries laboratory established at Beaufort in 1899. The street in front was not built until the 1930s, and the old waterfront line remains visible in the yard.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":"Seth Gibbs (builder)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition, altered, on its original site, and in use as a private residence at the time of nomination.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.611442-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/24/7194/47719424/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/73001302.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001302/58745d5f66-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001302/58745d5f66-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Carl Griffith","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gibbs_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Carl Griffith</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gibbs_House.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"74001331","name":"Beaufort Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/beaufort-historic-district-74001331/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719424","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibbs_House_(Beaufort,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18150724"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/carteret-county/gibbs-house-73001302/"}
