It is a landmark of the early settlement of Van Cortlandtville. In 1781 and 1782 it served as a hospital for the French troops of General Rochambeau.","narrative":"Old St. Peter's Church is a small wood-frame church at Oregon Road and Locust Avenue in Van Cortlandtville, near Peekskill. It measures only 28 by 36 feet and rests on a dry stone foundation, with clapboard siding and a shingled roof that curves gently at the eaves, a feature often linked to Dutch or German building traditions. Entered on its long west side, it follows the early plan used for Church of England buildings, with a central pulpit on the east wall and a gallery along the north and west walls. Land was set aside in 1750 for a church, school and burying place, and construction began in 1766. The church was consecrated in August 1767 and received a royal charter in 1770. It saw little use during the Revolution, when French troops under General Rochambeau used it as a hospital in 1781 and 1782. After the congregation moved to Peekskill in 1838, services were sporadic until a 1964 restoration.","period_of_significance":"1766-1767","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Church of England plan; 18th-century clapboard frame construction","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored in 1964; condition listed as good, occupied, with religious use and unrestricted public access.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.007665-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/73001292.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001292/ed0be9e199-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001292/ed0be9e199-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"WindingRoad","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_St_Peters_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">WindingRoad</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_St_Peters_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323147","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_St._Peter%27s_Church_(Van_Cortlandtville,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7085055"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/old-st-peters-church-73001292/"}
