The central block was built in 1776 by Joseph Purdy and later expanded with wings and additions.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it a good example of a late 18th-century rural frame dwelling and a landmark in local settlement and community development. The Purdy family founded the hamlet of Purdys, ran mills, and donated land that brought the Harlem railroad branch to northern Westchester. The house has remained on its original site and in continuous family occupancy.","narrative":"Overlooking the old road through the Titicus Valley in Purdys, New York, this two-and-a-half-story frame house began as a rectangular dwelling built by Joseph Purdy in 1776. Over time a wing of similar proportions and several one-story additions were attached, creating an L-shaped main block. The original section has a central chimney, hand-hewn shingle sheathing, bracketed eaves and a five-bay porch added around 1870. Inside, wide floor boards, original hardware and window panes, and exposed hand-hewn oak beams survive. Purdy received land in 1768 from his grandfather, Daniel Purdy, who had obtained it from the Van Cortlandt family, and he established mills where the Titicus and Croton Rivers meet. His family went on to found the hamlet, promote a woolen mill that made cloth for War of 1812 uniforms, and donate land for the Harlem railroad branch in the 1840s. When the village site was flooded in 1895 for a reservoir, the house stayed in place.","period_of_significance":"18th and 19th centuries (specific date 1776)","architect_builder":"Joseph Purdy (erected the central block in 1776)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as good; the form states the house has been occupied continuously by the Purdy family since construction.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.311015-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/73001290.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001290/d0d5a120d3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001290/d0d5a120d3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PurdysNY_JosephPurdyHomestead.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PurdysNY_JosephPurdyHomestead.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323187","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Purdy_Homestead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6286376"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/purdy-joseph-homestead-73001290/"}
