It was built in two similar phases and first used as separate dwellings. An unusual feature is the stone structure that continues to the roof ridge as the shared wall between the two units.","narrative":"Set on a sharp curve of Sickelton Road in West Nyack, this one and one-half story Dutch house has roughly dressed sandstone on the first story, painted shingles on the gable ends, and a cedar shingle gable roof that runs lower at the back. The main block is five bays long, with a two-bay wing at the west end. It was built in two similar phases and first served as separate dwellings. A carved stone near the west door bears the initials M.P.S.T. and the date 1731, marking the west unit. The east unit was put up before the Revolution, possibly by Henry Terneur after his marriage in 1753. Each unit had a square room with a fireplace and a small rear room. The stone structure continues up to the roof ridge, forming the wall shared by the two units. Later dormers and slim Corinthian porch columns changed its look somewhat. The house was listed as a typical Dutch stone dwelling expanded to suit family needs.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":"Possibly Henry Terneur (east unit); builder of west unit unidentified","architectural_style":"Dutch stone house","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in excellent condition, altered, on its original site, and occupied as a private residence at the time of nomination.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.848469-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/73001263.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001263/b49563e433-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001263/b49563e433-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WestNyackNY_TerneurHuttonHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WestNyackNY_TerneurHuttonHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321522","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terneur-Hutton_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7702946"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/rockland-county/terneur-hutton-house-73001263/"}
