It was built around 1845 for banker Hamilton White; the architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is described as one of downtown Syracuse's most important visual landmarks and a survivor of the Greek Revival residences that once surrounded Fayette Park. It was the home of a prominent family: Hamilton White was a banker, railroad promoter and founder of several city institutions. Together with the neighboring Park Central Presbyterian Church, it preserves the feel of a fashionable nineteenth-century residential square.","narrative":"Built around 1845, this two-and-a-half-story painted brick house at 307 South Townsend Street faces a small downtown park in Syracuse. It rests on a high stone foundation and has a grilled frieze, a projecting box cornice, a hipped roof, a square cupola and a porch flanked by fluted Ionic columns. Inside, a central hall holds a curved cherry-balustered staircase, and original mantles, casings and built-in shutters survive. Additions include a north wing from the 1860s, a rear wing from about 1900 and two 1950s shop additions at basement level. Hamilton White, a banker and businessman who arrived in Syracuse in 1839, commissioned the house from an architect now unknown. He helped found the Syracuse Water Company and the Syracuse Fire Department, among other enterprises. The house is a rare survivor of the Greek Revival residences that once surrounded Fayette Park. It later housed the Kanatenah Club and now serves as offices.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1845)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition though altered; occupied, with main floors used as offices and the basement leased to a clothing store.
