Hezekiah Talcott began building it in 1789 and finished four years later, when the area was newly settled. The two-and-a-half-story main block is nearly square, three bays wide and four long, with a flattened gabled roof, four corner chimneys, Palladian windows in the gable ends, and a two-story porch across the facade. A small one-story wing extends at the rear, and a stone barn is the only surviving outbuilding. Inside, a central stairwell is flanked by front and rear rooms with carved mantels. The house is best known as the Stone House of writer Edmund Wilson, whose family used it as a summer home. Wilson rescued it from decay in middle age and made it his refuge until his death in 1972, and he described it in his book \"Upstate.\" At the time of listing the house stood empty and deteriorating.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Hezekiah Talcott (builder, commenced 1789)","architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in fair condition; the house is empty and deteriorating, and its future is uncertain.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.88661-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/73001198.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001198/c467539467-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001198/c467539467-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EDMUND_WILSON_HOUSE.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318606","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmund_Wilson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5339927"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/lewis-county/wilson-edmund-house-73001198/"}
