Its design is attributed to Barnabus Waterman, an architect-builder from Hudson, New York. It has been owned continuously by the descendants of Elisha Camp, a land agent, banker and civic leader, so it retains most of its original furnishings.","narrative":"Overlooking Black River Bay and Lake Ontario at Sackets Harbor, this two-and-one-half-story red brick house was built between about 1808 and 1815 for Elisha Camp, a land agent who arrived in the village in 1804. The War of 1812 prolonged construction. Its design is attributed to Barnabus Waterman, an architect-builder from Hudson, New York. The main facade is laid in Flemish bond and has five bays, a granite-stepped entrance under an elliptical relieving arch, and a Palladian window above. Stepped gables may reflect the Hudson Valley origins of its builder. Inside, a central hall, delicate Adamesque woodwork and a wallpaper titled \"Scene on the Bosphorus,\" designed in 1816 by Joseph Dufour, survive. Camp commanded artillery in the 1812 Battle of Sackets Harbor and became a banker, shipper and civic leader. His descendants have owned the house continuously, so many original furnishings remain, and later changes to the interior and rear wing have been modest.","period_of_significance":"1808-1815","architect_builder":"Attributed to Barnabus Waterman (1776-1839), architect-builder of Hudson, New York; built for Elisha Camp","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Excellent condition; occupied as a private residence; on its original site.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.786834-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/73001196.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001196/dd5c72ecb6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001196/dd5c72ecb6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ELISHA_CAMP_HOUSE.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"83001683","name":"Sackets Harbor Village Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/sackets-harbor-village-historic-district-83001683/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318216","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elisha_Camp_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5361740"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/jefferson-county/camp-elisha-house-73001196/"}
