It was built around 1815 for Vincent LeRay and is known as the Stone House.","why_significant":"It is presented as an elegant example of domestic architecture reflecting a French aristocratic family's settlement of northern New York. It was built for Vincent LeRay, land agent and son of James LeRay, and was the first stone house in the village. It is described as a monument to three generations of French commitment to America's independence and development.","narrative":"Overlooking the St. Lawrence River at the edge of Cape Vincent's Broadway, this two-and-a-half-story limestone house was built around 1815 for Vincent LeRay. He served as land agent for his father, James LeRay, whose family had come from France to develop large holdings in northern New York. The house was the first stone dwelling in the village and faces a landscaped lawn running down to the river. Its five-bay north and south facades, hipped roof, balustrade, central dormers and splayed limestone arches over doors and windows give it a symmetrical, restrained look. Inside, arched doorways line a broad central hall, and the kitchen remains in the basement with a dumbwaiter to the pantry. The only recorded alteration was the addition of bathrooms in the 1920s. Vincent LeRay soon returned to the family seat, and the house stood vacant until 1837, when the Peugnet brothers, French émigrés, bought it. It stayed in their family into the twentieth century. Outbuildings include a boathouse, cottage and garage.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (c. 1815)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked excellent and unaltered on its original site; it is occupied as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.220129-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/73001195.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001195/e6ff12cf72-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001195/e6ff12cf72-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:VINCENT_LE_RAY_HOUSE.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313250","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_LeRay_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7931903"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/jefferson-county/leray-vincent-house-73001195/"}
