It predates the popularity of octagonal buildings promoted by books in 1849. It served as a school from 1826 to 1952.","narrative":"Beside State Route 22 in the hamlet of Bouquet, about four miles west of Essex, stands a one-story schoolhouse built in 1826 with eight sides. Each rubble sandstone wall measures 12 feet 8 inches, with doors on the north and south faces and windows in the other six. A pyramidal wood-shingled roof rises to a bell cupola, and later additions include a frame lean-to and an entrance porch. Inside is a single room about 26 feet 10 inches across. Benjamin Gilbert built it for Daniel Ross, who was then constructing mills on the nearby Bouquet River. It was used as a school until 1952, and it was built four years before the state's free public school system was established. It is probably the oldest octagonal schoolhouse in New York, with only a brick example in Dryden, believed built in 1827, as a possible rival. At the time of listing it was empty, and the town hoped to turn it into a museum.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1826)","architect_builder":"Benjamin Gilbert, builder, for Daniel Ross","architectural_style":"Octagonal schoolhouse","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as good and altered; the building is empty, and the Town of Essex planned to restore it as a one-room schoolhouse museum.
