It is also the principal historical and architectural landmark of rural Quaker Hill, and it served as a hospital for American troops in 1778-1779.","narrative":"Built in 1764-1765 on a rise at an old crossroads on Quaker Hill in Pawling, this frame meetinghouse served the Quaker community of the Oblong, a narrow tract along the New York-Connecticut line. Congregants raised the funds through subscriptions from meetings in Westchester County, Connecticut and Long Island, and the building cost L679. It is two and a half stories tall, shingled, with a gable roof, a stone foundation and twin front doors leading to separate halves of the interior. Inside, a movable partition allowed men and women to meet separately, and a gallery runs along three sides. The woodwork is unpainted and the beaded members, wide plank floors and movable benches survive. Two iron stoves and a brick chimney are the only nineteenth-century additions. American troops used the building as a hospital in 1778-1779. The Society of Friends disbanded here in 1884, and the Historical Society of Quaker Hill acquired the property in 1937.","period_of_significance":"18th Century (specific date 1764)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and open to visitors all year; owned by the Historical Society of Quaker Hill and Vicinity and the site of an annual meeting of Friends in July.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.606955-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/73001182.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001182/487cd7d45f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73001182/487cd7d45f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Rolf Müller (User:Rolfmueller)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oblong_Friends_Meeting_House_Pawling_March_2007.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Rolf Müller (User:Rolfmueller)</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oblong_Friends_Meeting_House_Pawling_March_2007.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317427","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oblong_Friends_Meeting_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7075220"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/oblong-friends-meetinghouse-73001182/"}
