It served as an entertainment and community center from the 1890s through the 1920s, and later showed films until 1950. Village opera houses once common across the rural northeast have become practically extinct.","narrative":"Built in 1890 as part of the brick Douglass Block on East Main Street in Earlville, this opera house and its annex make up four of the block's eight units. The three-story theater sits above ground-floor storefronts, with a gilded interior, boxes with carved wood detailing, a three-sided balcony and an elaborate pressed tin ceiling. Earlville was a prosperous agricultural center, helped by the Chenango Canal and three railroads, and local business leaders wanted a cultural venue. Performances began in 1888 in a wood building that burned in 1890; fire struck again in 1892, prompting changes to the roofline. Local groups, minstrel and medicine shows and Chautauqua programs played there, and it also hosted dances, political meetings and basketball games. In 1937 it was adapted for sound films and operated until 1950. Its survival in largely original form is what sets it apart, since village opera houses have nearly disappeared across the rural northeast.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1890)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as vacant with restoration in progress; the theater closed in 1950.
