Its siting on a centrally located town square, a plan used across Georgia and repeated from the 1830 courthouse, is also cited as excellent.","narrative":"Meriwether County's courthouse in Greenville is a two-story brick building completed in 1903-4 on Court Square, the same site as an earlier courthouse of about 1830. Designed by J.W. Golucke and Co. in the Neo-colonial mode of the Georgian Revival, it has a portico on each of its four sides, with fluted metal columns, a full entablature and a pediment bearing the Georgia State Seal. Stone quoins mark the corners, and a large metal dome carries a columned cupola topped by a statue of Justice. Inside, four hallways meet at a central rotunda, and the ceilings are stamped metal. A Records Building was joined to it in 1967 using matching materials. The courthouse is valued for its classical proportions and for its place on a three-acre, tree-shaded town square laid out when Greenville was planned in 1828, an arrangement common in Georgia towns. Careful maintenance has kept the building well preserved.","period_of_significance":"1903-4","architect_builder":"J.W. Golucke and Co. (architects); 1967 Records Building connection by Edward W.
