It also served as a stage coach stop and a neighborhood school, and its builder helped found the area's first Presbyterian church and led a Confederate company.","narrative":"Curry Hill Plantation is a two-story heart-pine farmhouse six miles east of Bainbridge in Decatur County, Georgia. Duncan Curry began the plantation in 1842, and his son Duncan Curry, Jr. built the present house in the 1850s. It follows a plantation-plain plan with four rooms on each floor, a wide central hall, interior chimneys and small Greek Revival porches front and back. A rear wing added in 1970 left the front appearance unchanged. The property is remembered as a stage coach stop between Thomasville and Bainbridge, and the house also served as a neighborhood school with a hired tutor. Its builder helped establish the first Presbyterian church in the area, and he led Company F of the Fiftieth Georgia Regiment in the Civil War. The house is believed to be the oldest in the county held by one family for more than 130 years. About 400 acres remain, with a few outbuildings, and much of the original furniture is still inside.","period_of_significance":"19th Century; property acquired 1842, house built in the 1850s","architect_builder":"Duncan Curry, Jr., builder of the house","architectural_style":"Plantation-plain with Greek Revival porches","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as good and altered; occupied as a private residence, with preservation work in progress.
