It is described as largely unchanged after about 125 years. Significance is rated at the local level.","narrative":"Casa de Tableta, later known as the Alpine Inn Beer Garden, is a small redwood saloon at 3915 Alpine Road in Portola Valley, built about 1851. It began when Maximo Martinez, grantee of Rancho del Corte de Madera, gave Felix Buelna land where he set up a roadhouse. Displaced Californios met there to play Monte after the Gold Rush. The site lay at the junction of an Indian trail across the San Francisco Peninsula and the Arrastrado road to San Jose. Buelna lost the property in a poker game in 1868 to William Eccles Stanton. Later the saloon drew Stanford students and stayed open when nearby towns banned saloons. It carried the sign \"The Wunder\" and continued operating through Prohibition as a picnic park. The false front was raised and painted white in 1904, and the interior was later opened into one large room. The building looks much as it did after nearly 125 years of use, and it remains in commercial use.","period_of_significance":"19th Century; specific date ca. 1851","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in commercial use, and in fair condition; the form describes it as unaltered and on its original site.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.286704-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/73000447.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73000447/8b488c368d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/73000447/8b488c368d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"W Nowicki","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Casa_de_Tableta,_Portola_Valley,_California.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">W Nowicki</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Casa_de_Tableta,_Portola_Valley,_California.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861496","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casa_de_Tableta","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q49477131"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-mateo-county/casa-de-tableta-73000447/"}
