Fifth Street was the first of Richmond's riverside neighborhoods to be developed and was favored by prominent citizens from 1790 to 1880. Its adaptation to business use is credited with securing its future.","narrative":"Built in 1844 at 15 South Fifth Street in Richmond, this grey stuccoed Greek Revival house has two stories above a basement. Tobacconist William Barrett, reportedly the original maker of \"Lucky Strike\" chewing tobacco, had it built, with his cousin Anderson Barrett, a builder, supervising the work. Its Ionic-columned entrance portico and triple first-floor windows reflect the later Greek Revival taste for ornament, while the overall proportions remain simple and symmetrical. Inside are a wide central hall, marble fireplaces, original woodwork and a gently spiralled mahogany stair. A stuccoed brick outbuilding once held servants' quarters above stables. Later occupants included a French consul and a Baptist mission leader. A planned demolition for a garage was avoided, and the house was restored in 1937 and later converted to offices. It is regarded as the finest of four Greek Revival houses built on Fifth Street in the 1840s.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1844)","architect_builder":"Built under the supervision of Anderson Barrett, a builder and cousin of owner William Barrett","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, restored in 1937 and in office use (Fitzgerald and Co.) at the time of nomination.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:58.082174-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/39/6829/41682939/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/72001517.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001517/2fa3d95487-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001517/2fa3d95487-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Barret_House,_Fifth_%26_Cary_Streets_(Richmond,_Independent_City,_Virginia).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Barret_House,_Fifth_%26_Cary_Streets_(Richmond,_Independent_City,_Virginia).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"71000982","name":"James River and Kanawha Canal Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/james-river-and-kanawha-canal-historic-district-71000982/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682939","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barret_House_(Richmond,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4863396"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/richmond/barret-house-72001517/"}
