Its rectangular hipped-roof form shows the architectural conservatism of rural southside Virginia after the Revolution. Nearly all of its original fabric survives, and it was also occupied by Union officers, including General Sheridan, during the Civil War.","narrative":"Weston Manor is a plantation house standing in a grove of trees on the south bank of the Appomattox River in western Hopewell, Virginia. It is a two-story rectangular block with a hipped roof, five-bay river and land fronts, center doors, and a central hall with a semi-circular arch. The Gilliam family, William and Christine Eppes Gilliam, probably built it in the 1780s, on land first patented in 1637 by John Baker. During the Civil War the house was shelled by a Union gunboat and later housed Northern officers, including General Philip Sheridan, while City Point supplied the siege of Petersburg. Its significance rests on architecture: it is an excellent example of Late-Georgian plantation building and one of the few such houses left on the lower Appomattox. Nearly all original fabric survives, including sash, beaded clapboarding and most mantels, though the surrounding farmland has been lost to development.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Georgian (Virginia Georgian plantation house)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition fair; at the time of nomination it was occupied and used by its owners as inexpensive rental property, and a movement to preserve it was underway.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.681056-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/12/6813/41681312/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/72001505.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001505/0242485e23-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001505/0242485e23-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"AJ Belongia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Weston_Manor_Front.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">AJ Belongia</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Weston_Manor_Front.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681312","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weston_Manor","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7989449"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/hopewell/weston-manor-72001505/"}
