It is a scarce example of an early, two-story, single-room-deep brick house with fine Georgian brickwork and mostly intact structural framing. It also has naval associations through the Herbert family and the 1718 display of Blackbeard's head at the site.","narrative":"Herbert House is a brick dwelling at the east end of Marina Road on Hampton Creek in Hampton, Virginia. Dating to the mid eighteenth century, it is described as the oldest standing house in the city and one of the oldest buildings on the lower Peninsula. The original two-story block faces east and shows eighteenth-century masonry techniques: Flemish bond above a beveled water table, English bond below it, random glazed headers, rubbed brick at openings and corners, a belt course and gauged brick flat arches. Later work added a brick rear ell, a frame two-story wing and a two-level front porch, and some interior walls were removed. The Herbert family held the house until 1808, and several family members served in the Virginia navy during the Revolution. Tradition also places the displayed head of the pirate Blackbeard here in 1718. The house is valued as a scarce example of an early, single-room-deep brick house with Georgian detailing and surviving original wood framing. It was vacant and in fair condition when documented.","period_of_significance":"18th and 19th centuries (specific date 1753)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as fair and altered; present use marked as vacant and the property as unoccupied.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.381644-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/99/6810/41681099/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/72001504.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001504/a751cfc278-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001504/a751cfc278-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HERBERT_HOUSE.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681099","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_House_(Hampton,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15223694"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/hampton/herbert-house-72001504/"}
