The first section was built in 1873-74, with wings added in 1878, 1880 and 1885.","why_significant":"The nomination presents the house as a fine Texas example showing Italianate influence, a style only occasionally chosen for nineteenth-century Texas homes. Later additions between 1878 and 1885 kept to the style of the original portion. It is also tied to John Wesley Mann, a pioneer industrialist, businessman and banker who made the bricks used in its construction.","narrative":"East Terrace, also called the John Wesley Mann House, is a two-story brick residence at 100 Mill Street in Waco. The oldest part dates to 1873-74 and has an L-shaped plan with a three-story entrance tower under a mansard roof with arched dormers. Wings were added in 1878, 1880 and 1885, giving the house an F-shaped plan joined by slender two-story galleries. Round-arched windows with brick hood-molds and wide bracketed eaves appear throughout. The house sits on a terrace beside the Brazos River, and all its brick came from the Mann kiln just east of the building. Mann, born in Tennessee in 1838, was a pioneer industrialist, banker and brick contractor who helped build many fine Waco homes. The house is valued as a Texas example of Italianate influence, a style rarely chosen in the state in the nineteenth century. It was restored in 1966, received a state restoration award in 1967, and now operates as a museum.","period_of_significance":"19th Century; specific date 1873-74","architect_builder":"John Wesley Mann (brick made in the Mann brick kiln; Mann and his brother J.F. Mann built many Waco homes)","architectural_style":"Italianate influence, not strictly Italian Villa style","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and unaltered, on its original site.
