It is a rectangular seven-bay building with a hipped roof.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an excellent example of the hipped-roof rectilinear colonial church form favored in the later eighteenth century. It is regarded as one of the most refined examples of colonial architecture in Virginia, notable for its proportions and its brick doorways with simple pilasters and pediments. It is believed to have been designed by architect John Ariss.","narrative":"Lamb's Creek Church is a colonial brick parish church in a wooded clearing near Sealston, King George County, Virginia. Built in 1769-1770, it measures about 80 by 34 feet and has seven bays along the sides, a hipped roof with a modillion cornice, and walls laid in Flemish bond with rubbed and gauged brickwork. Its doorways have plain molded brick pediments and shallow pilasters. The original interior is gone, replaced by plaster walls and an early twentieth century board ceiling, though the slate flagstone floor survives beneath a raised wooden floor. The church served Brunswick Parish and is believed to have been designed by John Ariss, who also designed the similar Payne's Church. It was abandoned after the Disestablishment, restored about 1825, used as a stable by Federal troops, later used by Baptists, and repaired in 1908, 1939 and 1954. It is valued as one of Virginia's most refined colonial churches.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":"John Ariss (believed architect)","architectural_style":"Hipped-roof rectilinear colonial church","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as good and unaltered on its original site; only one service a year is held, and the church has been largely inactive since 1914.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.567056-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/10/6814/41681410/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/72001403.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001403/e2fee72461-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001403/e2fee72461-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Michael Kotrady","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lamb%27s_Creek_Church,_King_George_County.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Kotrady</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lamb%27s_Creek_Church,_King_George_County.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681410","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamb%27s_Creek_Church_(Sealston,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6481001"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/king-george-county/lambs-creek-church-72001403/"}
