Its Federal-style brick residence was built by Edward Cunningham after he moved to the plantation in 1825, on a property first patented in 1714.","why_significant":"The nomination calls the house an outstanding example of the later, classical revival phase of Federal architecture, with ties to Richmond architecture of the period and to the style of Robert Mills. It also notes that the plantation has one of the most complete sets of ante-bellum outbuildings in Virginia, including three rare log slave quarters on a plantation street.","narrative":"Howard's Neck is a James River plantation in Goochland County, Virginia, set on one of the highest points of a bend in the upper James. Charles Fleming patented the land in 1714, and Allen Howard renamed it in the 1740s. Edward Cunningham, a Richmond industrialist, bought it in 1807 and later built the present two-story Federal house of Flemish bond brick. It has a shallow deck-on-hip roof, a Doric cornice and a small tetrastyle Roman Doric portico. Inside are marble mantels, plaster cornices and a spiral stair. Tradition links the design to Robert Mills, and the house resembles Richmond buildings that have since been demolished. The grounds keep an older farm dwelling, a brick kitchen, an orangery, boxwood gardens, carriage houses, a tobacco barn and three log slave quarters along a plantation street. The Hobson family owned the property from 1850 to 1945. It remains a working farm and was recognized for its architecture and its nearly complete set of ante-bellum outbuildings.","period_of_significance":"18th and 19th centuries (boxes checked; no specific years given)","architect_builder":"Built by Edward Cunningham; tradition holds that plans were provided by Robert Mills, but the form says his formal engagement is uncertain","architectural_style":"Federal (later or classical revival phase)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still a productive farm and private residence; condition marked good and unaltered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.670019-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/57/6809/41680957/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/72001398.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001398/176e02841c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001398/176e02841c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jjmusgrove","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Howards_Neck_Exterior.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jjmusgrove</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Howards_Neck_Exterior.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680957","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard%27s_Neck_Plantation","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712584"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/goochland-county/howards-neck-plantation-72001398/"}
