Built in the late eighteenth century and enlarged in the early nineteenth, it was rebuilt after a 1959 fire.","why_significant":"The nomination presents Gay Mont as a notable Rappahannock valley plantation house with surviving early nineteenth-century wings, colonnade and French-style gardens. It also stresses the careful rebuilding of the house after the 1959 fire, which kept as much original fabric as possible. The landscape and setting on the ridge are described as remarkably intact.","narrative":"Gay Mont is a plantation house set on a high ridge above the Rappahannock Valley near Port Royal in Caroline County, Virginia. John Hipkins, a Port Royal merchant, built the original frame house in the late eighteenth century on land he assembled between 1786 and 1799. His grandson, John Hipkins Bernard, renamed the estate in honor of his wife, Jane Gay Robertson, and after a European tour added brick wings, a Tuscan colonnade and formal gardens laid out in the French manner. Later additions included an octagonal music room, library and office. A fire in June 1959 destroyed the center section and gutted the wings. The present owners rebuilt the house on its original foundations, kept the surviving colonnade, wings and chimneys, and restored the terraces and gardens. The interior woodwork was lost, but the setting and landscape largely survive. The property covers about 318 acres, which the owners planned to protect with an open-space easement.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"John Hipkins (original builder); enlarged by John Hipkins Bernard","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Rebuilt after a June 1959 fire destroyed the center section; the form lists it as occupied, in good condition, and used as a private residence and museum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.594138-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/65/6799/41679965/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/72001387.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001387/53f2d2b4e5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001387/53f2d2b4e5-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gaymont,_U.S._Route_17_vicinity,_Port_Royal_vicinity_(Caroline_County,_Virginia).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gaymont,_U.S._Route_17_vicinity,_Port_Royal_vicinity_(Caroline_County,_Virginia).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679965","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_Mont","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712350"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/caroline-county/gay-mont-72001387/"}
